Houseware dispenser and sealing device

A dispenser or shaker is used to store and dispense powdery or granular substances, and a sealing device for the shaker forms a seal against the escape of the substance between the lid and the shaker body. The lid can be placed around the mouth of the shaker body, and they can be rotated relative to one another to "lock" the lid onto the shaker body. The lid contains a number of dispensing holes through which the powdery or granular substance contained within the container body may be dispensed. The sealing device is located within the sealing lid, and provides a seal between the lid and the container body to prevent the powdery or granular substance from being ejected from the space between the sealing lid and the container body. The sealing device includes an inner and an outer ring made of materials that allow effective mounting of the device within the lid and formation of an effective seal, yet that provide for easy removal of the sealing device for cleaning.

What’s new in small appliances: 2008 Housewares Show wrap-up

The 2008 International Home & Housewares Show (IHHS) recently took place in Chicago. Michael DiLauro, a product-information specialist for Consumer Reports, describes some interesting products and trends.Smaller appliances are taking on multiple personalities, as manufacturers are incorporating multiple functions into their products. Makers are also adding enhanced programmability to their wares, allowing you to fine-tune the process, say setting the brew strength on a coffeemakers. Some of these countertop devices are also getting bigger screens and brighter displays with backlit LCDs.

Technology continues to reign, as appliances add electronic controls that prevent temperature spikes, keeping the heat consistent over the cooking process. (Learn what's behind this technology.)Manufacturers are also trying to blend some of their smaller appliances seamless into home décor. Consumers don’t want their room air purifiers and cordless handheld vacuums, for example, to stand out when they’re plugged in. With consumers expected to spend less this year, small-appliance makers were touting the cost-saving aspects of their products. Slow cookers, claimed one company, use about 3 cents per hour compared with 25 cents per hour for a wall oven. Vacuum sealers were also being pitched as way to lower food costs.

Houseware makers seek greener products

The International Home and Housewares Show 2008, held this week in Chicago, touted many eco-friendly, energy-efficient household products coming soon to retail and online stores. Sales of home accessories are expected to grow by up to 5 percent this year, despite a downturn in sales of homes and construction goods, according to the International Housewares Association, which runs the convention. Energy conservation is key to keeping utility bills low and relaxing demand on the electrical grid. But who knows how much it costs to keep a computer or home theater humming? The $100 Kill A Watt eight-outlet power strip, shown here, should tell you.

Its display spells out energy usage over time, including maximum and minimum volts, amps, watts, and leakage current. When it detects that no power is being drawn, the Kill A Watt switches to no-load mode. A filter is built to dampen noisy AC power. The original Kill A Watt only had one outlet.

Does Beauty Come in a Basket?

In this fast-paced society, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet can be a challenge. Because time has become so precious, we resort to quick fixes - eye creams that claim to reduce puffiness and dark circles overnight, weight loss pills that will magically make you shed five pounds in one week and "potion" lotions that make your skin "firm" and "glow." Furthermore, the vitamins and minerals that must be ingested are now formulated in skin products. Can beauty be found in a jar? After your nightly routine, you look into your reflection and can't help but notice your beauty "problems" - greyish skin, brittle hair or acne.

"What you're actually seeing is a reflection of the inner imbalances not only by a lack of the vital beauty essentials - a detoxed system, purified water, powerful proteins, beautifying oils, immune-boosting fruits and veggies, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and balanced hormones - but also by toxic overload and mental, emotional or spiritual blocks," said Ann Louise Gittleman, author of The Living Beauty Detox Program: The Revolutionary Diet for Each and Every Season of a Woman's Life. However, after cleansing (detoxification), a well-balanced diet and exercise will help you feel wonderful.Gittleman prescribes a different cleansing diet for every season, focusing on the organs that are affected by climate change. Her methods are based on traditional Chinese medicine.
